Frelinghuysen’s Alliance with the Oil Industry and BP

CHATHAM (June 21, 2010) – The Center for Responsive Politics reported on Wednesday that Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen holds a direct stake in BP. The report indicated that Frelinghuysen is one of seven Congressmen who own more than $15,000 worth of BP stock. In fact, Frelinghuysen owns between $50,000 to $100,000 of BP stock, which made up to $15,000 in profits last year. One of the seven implicated Congressmen has since sold his stock.

Frelinghuysen’s stake in BP shows that his “personal and political interests lie in protecting oil-companies.” Douglas Herbert said, “It is troubling that Frelinghuysen has chosen to put his personal gain over the concerns of our nation and the people of the 11th District.” Frelinghuysen, during his time in Congress, has aligned himself with the oil industry. The latest report from the Center for Responsive Politics exposes why: “Frelinghuysen is voting in Congress based on his own personal profit,” Herbert said.

Frelinghuysen’s relationship with the oil industry is well-known. He has even voted to continue tax breaks and subsidies for big oil companies, despite the fact that they make billions of dollars in profits every year. In turn, the oil companies have rewarded Frelinghuysen by giving him money for his re-election, including ExxonMobil and Conoco Phillips, to the tune of $6,500. As Herbert said, “Republicans such as Rep. Joe Barton and Rodney Frelinghuysen have pursued the Cheney-energy plan, which places the interests of the oil industry above our interests and the environment’s.”

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has made all too clear that long-term health of our environment is at odds with fossil fuels. Douglas Herbert believes it is time for a comprehensive energy strategy with innovative green solutions that protect our air, water and land while creating the necessary energy to power our businesses, homes and vehicles. It is time for a new Congressman who will work for us and not BP.

Statement on Primary Victory

Morristown – June 8, 2010 – To all the voters, thank you. Thank you for believing in me. I am honored and humbled to be your Democratic nominee for Congress. To my volunteers and friends, I would not have gotten to this point without your help, support and time.

Tonight’s results illustrate clearly that Democrats in the Eleventh District are united and ready to fight for a responsible and honest leader. The time has come for a new Congressman. Despite recent signs of improvement, we are still in the midst of a challenging economic crisis. Too many middle class New Jerseyans have lost their jobs, homes and healthcare and need help. Rodney Frelinghuysen, throughout his tenure as Congressman, has shown time and again that he is more interested in representing Wall Street and special and political interests than hardworking Americans.
