(Morristown) – August 25, 2010 – This afternoon at 1pm in Morristown, Douglas Herbert, the challenger in New Jersey’s 11th District, held a press conference in front of the Morris County Republican Headquarters and called on eight-term Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen to accept his debate challenge and to respond to invitations from the League of Women Voters, the NAACP, and Sparta United for Education. “We’re here today to, once again, call on my opponent to participate in one of the finest traditions in American politics, a debate.”
Focusing on the economic crisis facing America, Doug emphasized that the stakes in this year’s election could not be higher. Doug stated, “I am here, today, to let my opponent know that the people of this District care about who represents them in Congress. They deserve a leader who will offer answers to their questions and who will represent their interests in Congress.” “For their sake, I once again call on you to appear at a series of debates with me so that the people of our District will know where each of us stands on the issues facing them, our State and our Country.”
Herbert was joined by representatives from the Morris County Chapter of the NAACP, Sparta United by Education as well as Republican voters from the Eleventh District. Herbert said, “Representative Frelinghuysen, I stand in front of your campaign headquarters today united with people from all parties and groups. For their sake, I once again call on you to appear at a series of debates with me so that the people of our District will know where each of us stands on the issues facing them, our State and our Country.”

Douglas Herbert is a Chatham resident and an attorney with his own law firm in Brooklyn. Doug served our Country for four years in the 2nd Armored Division in West Germany and parachuted with the 82nd Airborne Division. He received numerous awards and decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal. After the Army, Doug attended night school while working in construction, eventually transferring to Columbia University where he majored in Political Science. Doug then went on to Seton Hall Law with his wife Marcy. They have three children ages seventeen, ten and five.
On July 28th, Douglas Herbert challenged eight-term incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen to an honest and open debate about the issues facing the hardworking people of New Jersey and America. Although Frelinghuysen has yet to respond, newspapers and opinion pages across the Eleventh District have lined up in support of Doug’s proposal.
From the Daily Record:
“We urge Frelinghuysen to accept the offer and to work with Herbert’s camp to set up some debates this fall…. A discussion of issues is nothing to be feared.”
From the Observer Tribune:
“The stakes are too high for voters to have to rely on pre-crafted statements. They deserve to know, directly from the candidates, why they voted the way they did.
The public deserves to know Frelinghuysen’s reasons, from him, and not from GOP talking points. He should put his views out and let his opponent test them. There is nothing that delivers fresh air to a political campaign better than head to head competition.”
From the Morris County Citizen:
“The fact that Frelinghuysen is among the great majority of Republicans who are in lockstep with the party leadership constitutes perhaps the greatest reason why the congressman should agree to debate his Democratic opponent, Douglas Herbert.”

(Morristown) – On this day, August 18th in 1920, Tennessee became the 36th State to ratify and propose the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. In the 90 years since its ratification, women have made great strides in American history and society. For instance, a total of 260 women have been elected to Congress, including Hattie Carraway who was the first female Senator in 1932.
This tradition continues today. In 2009, a record number of women were in the 111th Congress, 17 in the Senate and 74 in the House of Representatives. The Supreme Court now has 3 women justices, another first. In addition, women continue to start and run successful corporations and businesses.
Asked about the anniversary, Douglas Herbert, the Democratic candidate for Congress said, “We should not only remember the great victory won 90 years ago, but also push forward on the more recent victories for women like the Equal Pay Act in 1963, Title IX in 1972, and the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which passed just this year.”
(Morristown) – August 15, 2010 – Douglas Herber
t, who is challenging eight-term incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen, hosted a brunch Sunday morning at the ‘Grasshopper Off the Green’. Doug spoke to approximately 60 guests who turned out to hear him present his plan for the future of New Jersey and the United States. Doug’s remarks focused on the economy and he said if elected to Congress he will work to combat unemployment, invest in education and reduce the deficit.
Doug said, “We have an immediate need to create jobs, because the only way to move the country in the right direction is by getting America working again. Once America is working, Congress must then reduce our deficit and return our country to its economic prosperity.” As a small business owner, Doug emphasized that we cannot ignore the driver of our economic growth and that is entrepreneurs.
Turning his attention to his opponent’s record, Doug said, “Frelinghuysen says he supports helping the unemployed, but refused to vote for the extension of benefits. Frelinghuysen says he cares about reducing the budget, but he was 1 of only 7 members of Congress to increase their earmarks last year.” Going further, he said, “A Congressman should be both open and consistent. Frelinghuysen is neither. He has failed to respond to debate invites from the League of Women Voters and Sparta Unites for Education. The stakes in this election are too high for a candidate to ignore discussing the challenges we face.”
Doug’s remarks were well received, and Eleventh District voters came away energized and enthusiastic for the November election. Doug’s campaign is looking to build on the momentum from this weekend as Doug fights to unseat the eight-term Republican incumbent.
