(Caldwell) – September 28, 2010 – Douglas Herbert addressed 40 members of the Crane’s Mill Retirement Community in Caldwell today. Speaking about the urgent need to create jobs and reduce the deficit, Doug said, “while I support short term programs to provide assistance to those affected by the economic downturn, it must be coupled with a long term vision and fiscally responsible leadership. We cannot ignore the ever-growing deficit, because if we do, that will be the legacy we leave to our children, and to me, that is unacceptable.”
Referring to the recent jobs report, which showed a rise in unemployment over the past month, he said, “We have an immediate need to create jobs, because the only way to move the country in the right direction is by getting America working again. Once America is working, Congress must then reduce our deficit and return our country to its economic prosperity.”
Doug is challenging eight-term incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen in New Jersey’s Eleventh District. The District includes all of Morris County and parts of Sussex, Somerset, Essex and Passaic counties.

MORRISTOWN — Democrats facing an uphill battle in Republican-dominated Morris County rallied Sunday on the Green in support of local candidates, headlined by the challenger to longtime Republican Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen.
Douglas Herbert, an attorney from Chatham Borough, told the 70 people at the 1 p.m. rally that neither Frelinghuysen nor the other Republican candidates should be considered unbeatable.
Herbert charged that Frelinghuysen had not worked to lessen the impact of spending cuts on public schools in New Jersey.
“People of the 11th district … are in trouble,” said Herbert, a former U.S. Army sergeant who served with the 82nd Airborne Division. “It’s time that you had a person that represented you in Washington, not special and political interests. Unfortunately, my opponent has not done the job that he was hired to do.”
In response, Republican county party chairman John Sette, reached for comment afterwards, defended Frelinghuysen’s record and disputed the Democratic prospects for success on Election Day.
“That’s the same thing they say every year — that it’s their year,” Sette said. “The bottom line is, the Republicans do a good job.”
The eight-term congressman’s district includes all of Morris County and parts of Sussex, Somerset, Essex and Passaic counties. Of Morris County’s 314,660 voters as of March, 110,989 were Republicans and 69,675 were Democrats with 133,814 unaffiliated voters.
Mike O’Brien of Montville, a registered Democrat , was among those attending the rally.
“This is a big year,” he said. “I think President Obama is trying to get the country moving, and he needs support in Congress to do it.”
Avery Ann Hart, one of the three Democratic nominees for county freeholder, also addressed the rally.
“We are trying to break through that myth, that Democrats can’t win here in Morris County,” she said.
(Morristown) – September 17, 2010 – After weeks of mounting pressure from the Douglas Herbert Campaign and the voters of the 11th District, eight-term incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen has finally conceded to the calls for debates. The candidates scheduled two debates for October 17th and 29th. The first debate will be at the WMTR studios in Morristown at 11AM and the second debate will be in Hackettstown at the WRNJ studios, again, at 11 AM. Both debates will be broadcast to the public on radio. Journalists and photographers are also invited to both studios to cover the debates.
Upon hearing the news, Douglas Herbert said, “the people of the 11th District will now have a chance to hear an open and honest discussion about the issues and challenges facing America and New Jersey. Given the stakes of this election, I hope these are only the first of many opportunities for Congressman Frelinghuysen and myself to address and debate the issues facing us.”
It took 50 days for Frelinghuysen to answer Herbert’s and the voters’ invitation for a debate. Herbert commented on this by saying, “The Eleventh District deserves a Congressman who will boldly tackle the issues facing America. America does not have the luxury of having a Congress that sits on its hands. If elected, I will fight to create jobs and reduce the deficit. The only way to move the country in the right direction is by getting America working again.”
